As a fan of oldies, I want to share a few of my favourite songs that I resonate with very well and why I love them.

The One by Elton John
Elton John’s songs just have a nice feel and tune, but more importantly a meaning behind them.
This song is about experiencing true love, and there are a few ways the interpretation can go. Even though Elton John could have meant it in a romantic way, I am reminded about the times when after feeling inadequate for a long time, I found something in life that suits me or made progress, all those feelings seem to fade away.
I find this particularly applicable to finding and attracting the right friends. It’s like after facing so many setbacks and meeting the wrong ones and having to fight temptations to change myself to fit in, meeting the right ones reminds me of why I do what I do and gives meaning to all the struggles I face. When I was around the wrong ones, I was filled with despair, loneliness and self-critical thoughts. However, around the right ones, there will be this feeling of ade3quacy and like you don’t need anything else.
The lyrics of the song, namely “you’re all I’ve ever needed”, “and the pieces finally fit” and “no shadows block the sun” reflect feelings of adequacy or having found the things that one has been looking for. Sometimes, I feel very pessimistic when I don’t get the things I’m looking for and I feel that telling myself that it will all work out one day is too optimistic. However, I did get those things and sometimes while I may not be able to see it immediately, it’s still better to let nature take its course.
Time, Love and Tenderness by Michael Bolton
This song has a lovely tone and lovely lyrics. It is also a huge uplifter in times of sadness and heartache, and relates to the listener well when they feel hopeless.
I feel that this song is a timely reminder that tough times are not permanent and that there will be times when we face setbacks, but these setbacks can teach us valuable life lessons. I feel that this song is a good reminder that in our darkest moments, sometimes we need to let nature take its course and have self-compassion.
I don’t fully agree with one of the parts when the song goes “someday you’ll laugh at the heartache, someday you’ll laugh at the pain”. I feel that there is no need to beat oneself up for mistakes one has made or struggles because these mistakes and struggles are valuable life lessons. We need to accept the emotions instead of just ignoring or suppressing them.
Nonetheless, still a great one to listen to. The tune and lyrics are so soothing and enjoyable!
